Beweship installed Veikko Hirvimäki’s sculpture ‘Kiiski’ to New Children’s Hospital over the summer. Marjatta Levanto, who oversaw the artwork acquisitions to the New Children’s Hospital, says she had thought of Veikko Hirvimäki as soon as she got the news that Finnish Art Society was donating an artwork worth 20 000 EUR to the New Children’s Hospital.
- Hirvimäki’s massive wooden sculptures have always spoken to me as well as children. Their joyous, childlike technique felt like the perfect fit to this building, Levanto says.
The artwork was approved by the architect and art committee chair Anne Berner.
The artwork also garnered a lot of media attention as well as critique for being too scary from children’s point of view, and therefore unsuitable for the new hospital. However, Levanto says that the artwork has now found its place at the new hospital and at least the hospital staff has received the new artwork well and with a smile of their face.
